TOPIC: FAIL of the day

FAIL of the day 1 year ago #259652

So, here's one to log into the FAIL column.

I was off work yesterday and wanted to get rolling on my Saison (Sais-off). It was good timing since I had an ESB to bottle and that would be the LBK that I needed. I did my bottling and started my Saison at the same time. First note, do one thing at a time to be able to concentrate. Anyway, the recipe is an Extract with Specialty Grains -- 8 oz. Caravienne, 4 oz. CaraPils, 4 oz. Vienna. So anyway, got my water heated (mind you I didn't take a temp reading). I go to steep the grains and my blood-sugar bottoms out on me. I was going to let the grains steep for about 45 minutes. Well, I went downstairs and (due to my low blood-sgar) I became disoriented. I eventually got enough awareness to grab some chocolate candy and get my blood-sugar up. Problem is - I have ZERO!!! clue if that stuff was steeped for 10 minutes or 2 hours. And, as I said, I have no clue if the temp was 100 degrees or 155 or 190. When I finally rebounded, I took the grainbag out. Didn't think to sparge it, squeeze it, or anything. I think I lost maybe about 1/4 of the water/wort. So, I just filled her up with a little bit more water.

I went and added my 2 Lbs of Pilsen Light DME...but I have no clue if I used the whole Lb or if I left a few Oz still in the packages. But I did get it into the pot. I got it up to a boil and at this point my blood sugar comes back to good. So from here I can safely do my hop boil.

Anyways, hop boils finishes well and I go to cool down my wort. Well, blood sugar takes another dip (but not as bad as before) and when i think about coming back to take it out of the icebath...this stuff is definitely on the cool. When I pour the wort into the LBK...it doesn't really detect the temp...so I know it had to be cold. I took a hydrometer reading...projected a 1.062 OG and ended up with a 1.052. Anyways, I let it sit for a couple hours and then pitched the yeast. Even though I still think the wort was a bit cold.

Diabetic Episode + Brewing = FAIL.

Funny though. I will be curious what I get.

Wow, Christ...glad you didn't have any accidents during those episodes! My dad is diabetic and has taken some nasty spills when his sugar has bottomed out. Could be dangerous with hot wort around.

The good news is, no matter what, it looks like you made beer!!

Christ872,

I'm glad that it wasn't worse and that you're OK. And as manosteel mentioned, it looks like you made beer.

Perhaps a special commemorative name for this batch is in order.

Again...glad you're OK.

Re: FAIL of the day 1 year ago #259733

Yeah...I'm fine. Lucky I was able to get a moment of clarity to make enough sense to get some sugar in me cause this happened around 2 or 2:30 and the wife didn't get home yesterday until 6:30. THAT coulda been a doozie.

Well, we'll have to hope this works decently. I'll check if any fermenting is going on when I get home from work. I appreciate ya'lls concerns.

Appropriately, I had originally though of the name Sais-off...and I guess it's appropriate enough.

I am really glad you are ok.

Don't worry about pitching when the wort is too cold. As soon as it warms enough the yeast will go to work. This might even be better than pitching at the regular temperature.

Christ872 - first of all, I'm glad you're okay now. That was some scary stuff you depicted there. I'm glad you weren't driving or something like that. I've had episodes like that, but I always credit too many good times back in college. Secondly, I got your PM. The brews were a hit, especially your Mountie (HCCD). Good stuff. Would love to do the brews and barbeque, as long as you keep your blood sugar levels up. I don't know CPR...

Chris,

Like everyone else I am glad to hear you are OK. If all that is impacted is a batch of beer, I would have to call it good. Just remember to eat some good foods before you brew. LOL

I am sure it will turn out great.

Just give your beer, and yourself, plenty of fermentables.

Christ872,

I'm glad tou were aware enough to deal with your blood sugar levels. Your health is more important than any batch of beer. However, it appears that both of you came through OK.
