Like a lot of people I got my first kit at a Bed Bath and Beyond clearance event. Thus the addiction began. I now have five fermenters and two temperature controlled mini-fridges. While I always make sure to have some Mr.Beer supplies on hand, I have branched out to creating my own recipes, but still do all of my Fermentation in Mr.Beer kegs. Most of my own recipes are done with unhopped liquid Malt Extract with steeping grains or partial mashes. Doing my own recipes allows me to be creative and I really enjoy that. However, great beer can be made using Mr.Beer kits and I still brew with them frequently. Whether making beer with Mr.Beer or your own recipes, the one single thing that I feel that will improve your beer ten fold is temperature controlled fermentation. Good ingredients are important and proper sanitation is key, but temperature controlled fermentation is vital to making great beer.
