Is this batch infected?

11 posts in this topic

I cold crashed my Helles for the past 2 days.  I see there are floating brown items on the top of the LBK.  Is this infected?

How to tell and what to do if it is?

The extract was Helles Bock Spring Seasonal 2015.  The yeast is Saflager W34/70 Dry Brewing Yeast.  If that helps.

I won't ask why the lid is off...

Hard to tell with the lighting.  That could simply be protein clumps.

I would bottle, but as those get near the spigot don't bottle them.

The sample does not taste or smell weird.

I have seen that in several of my batches. Everything comes out good so far. Tastes good, smells good ...... is good! I say Bottle it and in 4 weeks give it a taste.

I took the lid off for a quick peek for a a half a minute before bottling about 30 minutes before bottled

i have had multiple batches, usually with US04 that look identical to that at bottling. they all came out fine.  looks like nothing more than yeast rafts and hop dust to me. sometimes when the krausen collapses it leaves this junk behind as floaters. no biggee.

Definitely not infected. That's just yeast floating on top. Most infections will create a biofilm that is usually white and chalky. In early stages, it looks kinda like thin sheets of ice with jagged edge like this:

Does not look infected to me.  Have seen similar in my brews w/o ever a problem.  Good luck.
