The heart and soul of your home brewery is, of course, your brewing ingredients. As you may or may not have already discovered, Mr.Beer has a crazy list of Refills plus what we call Recipes, where we expand your brewing possibilities even further, giving you the tools along the way to open up a universe of brewing possibilities. I'll recommend some best sellers and some staff favorites, but also, let's talk about how you can go about picking out a recipe that will be pleasing to your own specific palate.
In our Recipes section, my favorite landing spot is the list of All Recipes. It's because this page gives me some quick and dirty numbers that act as my first defense against picking the right recipe. Each recipe is listed with three numbers: an ABV, or alcohol by volume, level, an IBU, or International Bittering Units number, which indicates the bitterness level of the beer, and the SRM, or Standard Reference Method number. This number is used to classify the actual color of your beer. Click any recipe to see its product information page, where you'll find a visual representation and explanation of these numbers, as well as a full description of the flavor of the beer and all the other info you've come to expect while shopping with Mr.Beer.
You can filter the Recipes all kinds of different ways depending on what you're looking for. Need a specific style or love a particular HME? Or are you just looking for some great holiday favorites or maybe something fruity for next spring? Is Santa on a budget? And then, for some quick n easy selections, our Sale Recipes are always Mr.Beer favorites.
Some fan and staff favorites, for your picking pleasure:
Bengal Tiger IPA is my personal favorite. Not the same style, but puts me in mind of New Belgium Fat Tire. A beautiful mahogany color with a smooth finish and some hop spiciness.
Otto's Octoberfest is a fan favorite, and likely because the Oktoberfest style is one of the most easily drinkable styles around. It has a good full body and a smooth malty finish that's hard to top.
Rose's Rambling Red is another Mr.Beer favorite. For you brewers who like something smooth and mellow.
Defibrillator Doppelbock 7.0 is our most popular beer recipe to date! This brew'll stop your heart - and then start it right back up again!
KT's Caramel Apple Cider is our most popular recipe....period. Like a wassail or spiced cider, it'll warm your bones up just right for the holidays.
And the granddaddy of strong beers, coming in at a hefty 11% ABV: the Novacaine recipe. I'll give you one guess as to how we came to name it thus.
What's that you say? Already got a handle on which beers you're lookin' for? All right then, brewer extraordinaire, let's move on to the fun stuff: tools.
One of my favorite splurges on the site is the growler and its companion, the growler tapping device. It's the kind of thing that you may not buy for yourself, cause you know you don't necessarily need it, but still you yearn for it in private. It's a growler that surpasses all other growlers, as it's not just a basic jug. It has a sweet little swing top mechanism that looks awesome, but furthermore, makes accessing your beer easier and losing a lid that much harder. The tap assembly that is available for use with the growler, though is really whats up. Carbonate and lager your beer in your growler, then, when you're ready to serve, you can pop that sucker on and serve up a storm, all the while looking the classy gent with your fancy serving spout.
Not your cup of tea – er – brew? What about a professional bottling system? So named because you can bottle your beer up just like it comes commercially – in 12 ounce long necks. The classic American beer drinkin' vestibule. Plus, whether you choose these bottles or not, keep in mind that we've just redesigned our bottle labels to be easy to use and remove, and they're available for all our refill flavors!
Gadgets kinda person? Maybe you're more interested in a hydrometer which can assist you in knowing some exacts: exactly when your beer is ready to bottle, and exactly what ABV level will be.
Is it time to expand your brewing empire? You need some extra brewing kegs to up your production and some locking spigots and bottling wands to streamline your bottling process. Cause we all know bottling is the most painful part, aside from the waiting.
Or maybe you just want to glory in the possibilities and cruise the Mr.Beer online store yourself. Use the wish list feature in your online account to save your favorites, and remember that we're just a phone call, a chat, or an email away if you have questions, as always!!!
