Fantasy Football Update
Greetings fantasy football junkies,
It’s December, which means a few things: snow, cold, holiday madness, cold, time spent with annoying family members, and cold. Also, it means the last quarter of the NFL season as well as the last quarter of our inaugural Mr.Beer Fantasy Football Challenge! With only two weeks left in the regular season, we’re in the middle of some pretty hot conference races that should calm those Winter Winds for a little while. Remember, only the top teams from each conference move on to the playoffs. And with that, here’s a preview of what we can expect.
As of today, only one conference has clinched a playoff spot, and that’s team Green Machine in the High Country Canadian Draft Division. And what a season he’s had! Not only does he have the best W/L record (and is the only undefeated team left in the entire league), he also has far more points than anyone else. It’s looking like he’s the early favorite to win it all.
Otherwise, every other conference is up for grabs, so these last two weeks should be pretty exciting. Here are some matchups, broken down by conference, in the next couple weeks that could be a big influence on how the playoffs shake out:
West Coast Pale Ale
As of this week, 7 teams are still alive in this division, including yours truly, the commish (though I won’t count if I win the division). Team Winning Leagues Since 1985 has been gifted with a lucky match-up this week, against the never-set-his-lineup team StormDogz. Unless StormDogz finally decides to participate, that’s a guaranteed win for Winning. Tied with Winning, but with lower points overall, is Dancing Unicorns, whose next two weeks are going to be tough, facing two teams vying for the lead: roadkill and Nefarious Monks.
St. Patrick’s Irish Stout
There may be less teams vying for the playoff spot in this conference, but the race is much tighter, with 4 teams all tied at 9-3. The best matchup this week is between 9-3 Bitter Bear Face and 9-3 Chief’s Rule. Bitter has scored a lot more points overall, but its schedule is brutal, with matchups against two teams currently tied for the lead. This will prove to be one hell of a finish!
Linebacker Doppel Bock
And we arrive at the other conference with at least some degree of separation, but still at Kevin Bacon-like levels, as four teams are still in the hunt. D’s Doppelbockers is the current leader at 10-2, and its schedule is relatively easy – facing 7-5 Hail to the RedAle’s this week and 5-7 Slydawgs next week.
Cowboy Golden Lager
Five teams are still alive in this conference, but The Wayne Train currently leads this conference by one game, at 10-2. Its matchup against 3rd place Pigskin Cerveza could be a potentially big impact on how this conference finishes, as a Pigskin win would bridge the gap in the W/L records. As for current 2nd place team Got Beer?, they have to win both remaining games to have a real shot at the lead, but they will have a tough road ahead, as their remaining opponents have a combined W/L record of 15-9.
Classic American Blonde Ale
The team whose name happens to be my favorite food, Blackened Bacon, only need to win one of their two games and they’re in. Both Bad News Bears and Flying Elvis stand 2 games out of first, but have a pretty tough schedule ahead. I’m predicting Bacon to make-on into the playoffs.
High Country Canadian Draft
Green Machine can rest his starters, as he’s clinched the conference. Let’s all direct our collective scorn at his success.
Whispering Wheat
Another conference with six teams still alive. We have a three-way tie for first place, and a really exciting matchup this week between two of the three: purplepower and Guitar_Master. Whoever wins that will be in pretty good shape, though they’ll still have to contend with Daddy-O, whose record is a bit easier.
Octoberfest Vienna Lager
This may be the closest race of all the conferences, as seven teams are still in the hunt with no clear dominant favorite emerging save for Drunken Drafters, who are one game ahead at 9-3. The key matchup this week is between the two teams tied in second place, Testy Icicles and Phone Booth Gorillas. The win is likely more important for Testy to get, as they have a tougher last week matchup of the two.
As you can see, this race is far from decided. Over twenty teams have a realistic shot at the last 7 spots, so stay tuned and good luck! I will post another update next week after this week’s games are done.
