  1. I've made the Oktoberfest adding Pale dme/lme and other times I've used amber dme/lme (same as smooth). To me the Pale version turned out more like what I expect a true Oktoberfest should be like.
  2. I feel your pain Brian. I don't know if plastic is the answer as my only bomb was when the bottom blew off a 1 liter PET. It was in a covered cooler and still blew beer on the ceiling.
  3. I've never replaced a cap, and some of them are 5 or 6 years old.
  4. That chart isn't proportional. For instance 1/2 liter is 1 tsp but 1 liter is 2 1/2 tsp. FWIW I usually use 1 1/4 tsp per half liter.
  5. If I had to guess I'd say you're not getting the caps tight enough. When I get done bottling into plastic, I tighten as much as I can by hand, then take one of those grippers like you open a pickle jar with and give each cap a little more.
  6. Nice to see you back Pete. I'd say you got some catchin up to do.
  7. It's 8 weeks till the 4th of July. It will be ready. Prost!
  8. IDK Dawg, I still bottle every batch 1/2 into glass and 1/2 into plastic. Never had a carb problem in the plastic.
  9. I've never replaced a cap.
  10. Have you calculated how much the residual fuel in the rubber hose adds to your abv?
  11. It was Mr Beer's recipe!
  12. Here's one I made quite a while ago: 8oz Carapils steeped Bewitched AA HME 1.5 lb amber lme 3 Tablespoons butterscotch schnapps 1/2 packet US-05 yeast Notes say it was OK, nothing great.

Speaking of Schlitz, it's getting hard to get around here. Found some 40 miles away in 16 oz cans only. I kinda like it for nostalgia purposes. 1960's recipe.
  14. US-05 is a good all around choice.
  15. I would not count on conditioning out off flavors.
  16. Congrats Hotrod! Here's to many more great brews.
  17. You should give them all 4 weeks to carb and condition. As for glass or plastic, I've been at this for 8 years and still bottle each batch into half glass and half plastic. I've had a flat in a glass fliptop, a flat in a capped glass where I got the cap on a little cockeyed, but never a flat in plastic ( some were in plastic for 2 years.) Have had a plastic bottle where the bottom blew off though.
  18. Congtrats on a fine looking beer, and many more to come.
  19. I got nothing against Booster. I usually add 1/2 pouch per batch. If nothing else it brings the abv up and over the estimate Mr Beer gives without changing the flavor. Booster got a bad rap because years ago we were adding a whole pouch to a small can of malt which resulted in too much adjunct.
  20. That's the spirit. Patience is a virtue in homebrewing.
  21. My wife thinks the aroma of brewing is heavenly, especially steeping grains.
  22. Most around here condition 4 weeks at room temp after bottling. It's going to be pretty green after only 2 weeks.
  23. No you're not the only one using Booster. I usually add 1/2 pouch to each batch.
