  1. I did indeed leave the plastic rings on the caps. I didn't consider those could be an issue, since they were all new. AFAIK all my brews fermented properly, as I have always been within one point of gravity for my final reading. The only thing I could think of is that the sugar went into the bottles dry, rather than dissolved in water and mixed with the beer(no bottling bucket yet).
  2. The plastic bottles have only been used for three batches. They were purchased new(along with caps) from my LHBS. I do make sure they caps are on tight when bottling.
  3. I suppose it's possible that it's temperature related, although I don't think 65-68 should cause any issues. Also, while my first brew was pitched with the yeast that came with the Mr. Beer kit, the rest have been 11.5g sachets purchased from my LHBS, which should be MORE than enough for the amount in the LBK. This is a strange conundrum I'me dealing with here
  4. I've brewed a few batches of beer, and bottled using the Mr. Beer guidelines in regards to carbonating. My first three brews went into 16 oz. PET bottles and were primed with 1 tsp. sugar(I've tried both table sugar as well as corn sugar) and have found all three to be low on carbonation, including one that has been conditioning for about 5 weeks. This past weekend I bottled in 12 oz. glass bottles with 3/4 tsp. table sugar in each. My thoughts are that because the plastic is flexible that I wouldn't necessarily achieve enough pressure in the bottle to achieve the proper carbonation levels(which is one reason the most recent batch went into glass). Am I off base in my thinking here, or could I expect decent carbonation in the beer bottled in glass, and increase the priming sugar amount for beers going into the plastic bottles?
  5. As was mentioned in the post above, there is no need to rinse the sanitizer that comes with the mr. beer kits. AFAIK it does not affect the outcome of the beer in any way(although I suppose if you were to try to brew with the sanitizer it wouldn't come out right). My first batch I followed the directions as exactly as I could, and a small taste test before bottling yielded favorable results. Welcome to the obsession!
  6. I have a whispering wheat standard refill and I'd really like to use it as a base for a Red Hook Summer Wheat clone, but I'm not sure where to start. I am willing to go as advanced as steeping grains and boiling hops as this will only be my third batch. I need the recipe to work using my LBK. Any suggestions for ingredients/process? Thanks in advance Edit: I was doing a little research, and created this recipe(for use in the LBK) 1 Can Whispering Wheat HME 1 Lb. Wheat Dry Extract 8oz 10L Crystal malt 60 min boil 0.5 oz Cascade hops 5 min boil 1.0 oz Cascade hops Muntons Premium Gold dry yeast I'm open to suggestions - I've probably got 3 weeks until my LBK is free for the next batch

Others said it split during the first batch. I don't think I'd risk it.ok, thanks. I'll just continue to relegate them to H2O duty
  8. To those who mentioned the high amount of adjuncts, I realized that AFTER I brewed, unfortunatly. I brewed the batch, and sat down at the computer and joined the forums, the first or second thread I read was the newbie thread regarding ratios of adjuncts to use. :pinch: I would like nothing more than to have another LBK so I could have a brew going every week, but for now, it's not in the cards.   9. So I just bottled my first batch of beer, which was the West Coast Pale Ale that came with my MR. Beer kit. As soon as I bottled, I started my next batch, which is based on the Mr. Beer Irish Stout. Here's what I've done - 1 Can Mr. Beer St. Patrick Irish Stout HME 1 Lb. Briess Light DME 1 Package Booster 1 Cup light brown sugar 1 Oz Fuggles pellet hops (60 min boil at 4.2% AA) Came out to 1.062 OG Fermenting with 1 11g package of SafAle US-05 I wish I had joined the forum BEFORE I brewed this rather than after, as one of the first threads I read was the one about using no more than 1/3 of the ABV from adjuncts. Not sure where I stand with my recipe as is, but I probably would have skipped the brown sugar had I realized...oh well, live and learn right? Anyway, there seems to be lots of knowledge here, and I look forward to brewing and reading more. Cheers!
