  1. Hey all, I am about to start sanitizing before I brew a batch and I noticed something on my keg. I guess the best way to describe it is that it has a bubble on the inside where the fill line is. I don't know if that it is warped or what it is, but it is no longer flat. The plastic comes out slightly. The outside looks fine and I don't see any cracks or scratches. I just noticed the same thing on the other end. Is my keg ok, or is it ruined somehow? Or was it always this way and I just didn't notice? I don't want to start my batch until I know the keg is ok. Thanks.
  2. Hey all I recently recieved another LBK from a co-worker because her boyfriend got one a couple of years ago but never used it. I want to start using that keg but I want to make sure its clean and ready to go. It has been sitting in the box for a couple of years, and has never been used for beer. If I do a good clean beforehand will it be good to go? Or is it possible that it has collected dust or something while in the box? For cleaning I have heard a lot of suggestions as to what works best. Will baking soda be an ok thing to use to clean it? Thanks.
  3. I can attest that I am very happy with the customer service that I have recieved. They told me that they would replace the spigot and the batch (which included a booster and LME as I bought the deluxe). They will replace it as soon as I send them the photos. I may be delayed in trying the beer, but it was a learning experience in the end. Thanks everyone for your help and guidance. Thanks as well to Mr. Beer for having great customer service.
  4. Is there a chance that Mr. Beer could replace the batch that i lost due to the malfunction after only 3 batches? Or should I assume not and just rebuy the materials to try again?
  5. Yeah it was very frusterating to lose the batch of beer. I was really looking forward to trying it after letting it carb and condition.
  6. Thanks for the help, and the song lol. I will email them about it. The worst part was losing the batch. It was sad to see that beer go.
  7. Hey all I was about to bottle my northwestern pale ale with booster and LME and the spigot broke. It started by leaking, something it did not do during fermentation. I got the bottles ready to go but as soon as I turned the spigot on to bottle the beer came flooding out. I lost the entire batch sadly. When I examined the spigot afterward it was broken from the part that is inside, where it is screwed into the washer. Any ideas on how that happened? It would have been my 3rd batch. The only thing I did differently is put a damp towel over it in a cooler to help with the temperature. I live in phoenix, arizona, and read that would help once it gets hot. Any help or insight would be appreciated.
  8. So I just finished brewing my third batch of beer. It is a northwest pale ale with a LME and a booster. Everything was going just fine until I added the LME to the HME and hot water. While I was in the middle of doing it my cat snuck up behind me and startled me, causing me to briefly drop the bag into the pot. I took it out in less than a second. Im still pretty new to this so I wanted to know, how much will this mess up my flavor? Will potential bacteria from the outside of the bag impact taste? The unopened bag had been sitting in hot water with the HME before I opened and poured it in. Secondary question. Since I live in Phoenix, AZ and it will be hot soon I put the keg in a cooler and put a wet towel over it. Should I put a frozen ice pack or two in there as well? Or will that be too much?
  9. So I have made a few batches of Mr. Beer using the kit that I recieved from my birthday. I am really getting into the hobby/obsession. A friend at work gave me a second kit because her boyfriend had gotten it a few years ago but never opened it. I am trying to find out if any of the materials are useable (outside of the keg, obviously). It came with a booser, and one refill, a high country canadian draft international series. The expiration date says 2011. Obviously the yeast is bad and I would need to get new yeast. Is the HME still workable at all, or should I toss it? I read that I should check for bulging and I don't see or feel any. The can feels normal. What do you think, should I give it a shot and make it, or should I get rid of it? If I try it would it be a good time to experiment a bit since the quality won't be optimal anyways?
  10. Thanks for the suggestion. I have a secondary question. Is it ok/normal to have both an LME and a booster in the same batch? Will that impact anything in a negative way. I'm still pretty new to this.
  11. Hey all, I am about to brew my third batch of Mr. Beer. I am going to brew up some northwestern pale ale, with a LME and a booster. How much time should I give for the fermentation, carbonating, and conditioning to get the best possible taste for this beer? I am planning a bbq on the last day of May to celebrate being done with another year of teaching, and I want to see if it will be ready by then if I brew today. I don't want to rush it, if it isn't ready then I will save it for when it is ready. So how many weeks should I give for each step with this beer?
  12. Hey all, I just bottled my second batch (czech pilsner) after fermenting for 3 weeks. It was a little cloudy in the bottles. Do I have anything to be worried about? Nothing seemed to go wrong in the process so far.
  13. Thanks for the help everyone, I apppreciate it. @Frozen, I have what is probably a very dumb question but I am new lol. You say to boil 1/2 pound dark DME. Is that the extract I buy or part of it, or is that something else? Thanks and sorry again for the dumb question. I am still learning the terminology.
  14. My second batch of beer is fermenting and I am looking at trying to branch out out from just doing the basic. I am thinking about brewing either a Northwest Pale Ale Deluxe or a Diablo IPA Deluxe beer. I was thinking about trying my hand at using hops but don't know much about them yet. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for what hops to use with either of those beers? Or have any other recipe or suggestions for brewing either of those beers? Thanks I appreciate it.
