  1. Grapefruit tastes bad enough just by itself. Why ruin good beer with it?
  2. Correct. What I've learned here is to ignore all free shipping sales and wait for the 20% off sales. Seriously, that's bad marketing to promote a small sale (free shipping) then follow it up so quickly with a bigger sale (20% off). It creates buyer remorse. Better to have the bigger sale first then have the smaller one soon after so the people taking advantage of the smaller sale don't feel so bad about being a week late for the bigger sale.
  3. So not right! A week ago I jumped on the free shipping offer and saved $7.99 on my $114 order. Had I simply waited until now to make the same order, I would have saved $27 but been more than willing to pay shipping. Next time I won't be fooled by free shipping and will wait for the 20% off deal.
  4. Do you have any family members across the border in the U.S.? Friends across the border in the U.S.? What you need is someone across the border in the US who can receive Mr. Beer shipments for you. Then periodically you drive over and pick them up.
  5. You probably won't get anywhere questioning the cost inconsistency. Several years ago, the cafeteria at work sold 2 different sized hamburgers (1/4 lb. patty & 1/3 lb. patty). If you wanted it to be a cheeseburger, it cost $0.25 more for the 1/4 lb. and $0.50 more for the 1/3 lb. Yet, it was the exact same single piece of cheese. I got nowhere questioning the sense there.

    Midas Touch

Thanks, Vakko. I may try that someday. Midas Touch isn't a beer I like that much though. My brother, who's 2000 miles away loves it.

    Midas Touch

I bought a couple of bottles yesterday of MIdas Touch by Dogfish Head Brewery. It's a strange beer that is supposedly based on a 2500+ year recipe determined by King MIdas' tomb. Anyway, the Midas Touch is an ale. The label says it's with barley, honey, white muscat grapes and saffron. It's 9% ABV. Could something like this be made in our LBK? I expect that the recipe would be something like 2 HMEs, honey and some grape juice concentrate. But have any of you tried grape juice in a beer? 25 years ago I made several 5 gallon batches of wine and that's a 6 month fermentation process with what I assume is a different type of yeast. I don't know why we ferment beer 3 weeks while wine takes 6 months. http://www.dogfish.com/brews-spirits/the-brews/year-round-brews/midas-touch.htm
  8. I just gave you a charity "like" since I feel sorry for your overall rate. And don't try to tell us how bad it was before "likes." Next you'll tell us you had to walk 10 miles to school in the snow every day.
  9. I wouldn't brag too much about this. You have 777 likes and 4,564 posts which is 0.170 likes/post. In comparison I have 93 likes and 279 posts for 0.333 likes/post. People like me almost twice as much as they like you.
  10. But he can select his March Madness bracket on ESPN. That's power!
  11. Done spent again. I just ordered the following ($114.43) (1) That Voodoo That You Do (2) Saazquatch Imperial Pilsner (3) Camilla's Folly (4) 1 Packet of Booster (I realized that I can add 1 packet of Booster to my Mexican Cerveza deluxe refill to get the Chug-a-Lugger recipe.)
  12. All these frequent specials just keep the pipeline going. This weekend I'll need to re-spend the $111 from the St. Patricks contest.
  13. I didn't realize until now that I've been paying an extra $1 for a package of sanitizer. I have a bottle of sanitizer I bought cheap from the local homebrew store. I'll start piecing together my recipes via the ingredient list and stop buying sanitizer packages. Thanks, Rick.
  14. Yep, the more you buy, the more you save. My wife says that when she goes to Macy's.
  15. RickBeer, When do you have time to brew beer if you spend all your time doing a spreadsheet?
  16. I'm very poor and describing beer tastes and such. The spices come through as a hint in the taste. It's not an aftertaste. At first sip, the spices are noticeable but they don't dominate. The spices come through in how I was hoping they'd come through. I put the spice bag in to the wort just after boiling the water and before adding the HME. The spice bag remained in the wort throughout the entire 3 weeks of fermentation.
  17. My Belgian Spiced Ale appears to be a success. I bottled it this evening. It tastes good even flat and the spices do come through nicely. I look forward to drinking it in a month. Plus, I got an extra bottle. Normally I get 22 bottles out of my LBK and this one I got 23.

    Abbey Dubbel

Perhaps my definition of half-carbed isn't too scientific. When I taste the beer from the LBK when I bottle, there's a small amount of dissolved CO2 in that beef just because fermentation has happened. That's what I mean. There's a touch of carbonation. Or a smidgen of carbonation.

The first bottle (the half-carbonated one that had spent over a day in the refrigerator) was the one with the greater possibility of trub as it was the last bottle I bottled. I think the greatest probability of what happened is that I didn't put priming sugar in that bottle. My process is such that the last bottle could easily be over-looked for priming sugar.

I don't think that was the factor. The half-carbonated bottle had been in the refrigerator for over a day. The fully-carbonated bottle I quickly chilled with 30 minutes in the freezer.

But the time in the refrigerator has nothing to do with the carbonation. It just has to do with the settling out of any yeast particles. Or please tell me if I'm wrong.
  22. I think you're thinking backwards here. Look at your problem from the reverse angle. Rather than try to lower the IBU of a recipe, change what you're eating with the beer. For example, I had an Abbey Dubbel this evening with some very spicy Chinese food. Pairing the 30 IBU of the Abbey Dubbel with the spicy Chinese food gave me the perspective that the IBU of the beer was lower. So, I suggest pair your high IBU beers with spicy food and in that context, the high IBU will be less noticeable.

All's well in beermanity. I quickly chilled a 2nd bottle in the freezer because I had to see if they all are half-carbonated. The 2nd bottle I opened is 100% awesome! Perhaps I just didn't get enough sugar in that first one I opened. I'll save my remaining 20 bottles until they've had more time to condition.
