I'm starting a batch based on the Grand Bohemian Czech Pilsner HME. I will be steeping some caramel malt and using DME, as well as a late addition (15 min) of Riwaka hops. My standard procedure in this kind of situation has been to steep the grains, add the DME, bring to a boil and then add the hops. I then boil the wort for as long as necessary for the desired effect ( aroma in this case) and then add the HME. I'm wondering if the brew would benefit in any way from a longer boil before the hops addition or if I'm okay with the way I'm doing it. Any ideas?
I bottled my last batch of "Pilot House Pilsner" at the end of 2011 and haven't brewed anything since. No real excuse other than, lots of changes, new babies..... the works! Got hard to fit it in and I guess I just lost my rhythm. Thankfully, I got plenty of time now and I'm ready to start drinking my own beer again. Now the last time I was here was pre-Cooper's and I can see that a lot has changed. But it looks good. If any of you folks out here have any experiences with the transition and have thoughts to share, I would love to hear about it. Aloha
