Brew #41 Oktoberfest

Recommended Posts

August 06, 2012

I know not the AG I was planning but have several OVL left, a can of Munich LME, and 2oz of German Hallertauer so decided to make a simple brew
I had some Belgian CaraVienna, so I used it (I know not true to style, but I like it)
Pretty much I had everything allready so I figured use what I have first.

--------------------
Brewer: Trollby
Style: Oktoberfest/Marzen
Batch: 2.40 galExtract

Characteristics
---------------
Recipe Gravity: 1.052 OG
Recipe Bitterness: 26 IBU
Recipe Color: 14° SRM
Estimated FG: 1.013
Alcohol by Volume: 5.0%
Alcohol by Weight: 3.9%

Ingredients
-----------
Briess LME - Munich 2.00 lb, Extract, Extract
CaraVienne - [body, Malt, Sweet]0.50 lb, Grain, Steeped
MrB. Octoberfest Vienna Lager 1.21 lb, Extract, Extract

Hallertauer (Germany) 0.50 oz, Pellet, 20 minutes
MrB. Octoberfest Vienna Lager 1.00 oz, Pellet, 5 minutes

Saflager W-34/70 1.00 unit, Yeast, Temperature Range: 48°-59° F 11.5 GRAMS

Notes
-----
Recipe Notes:
Add 2 Quarts of filtered tap water to 20qt pot and heat to 165*F turn off heat and add grains and steep for 30min.
Remove grains, add LME and bring to rolling boil.
Add hops for 10min, remove from heat and add HME.
Fill keg with filtered cold water to the 4-quart mark on the back.
Pour WORT into fermentor, add water to the top of "Quart" mark on Mr. beer keg, mix well
Take OG sample, aerate well and pitch yeast.
Wait 30 min, aerate again
Place keg in lager chest and maintain 48-52*F temp for 16-21 days
Raise temp of LBK to 62-66*F for 3 days for the D-rest.
After D-rest lower temp to 48-52*F for 7-10 days then bottle

Not sure what happened but the OG came in way low, maybe I did not mix it as well, or more water than expected (2.5+?)

OG = 1.044 @ 68*F

Nice recipe. I have to start trying some steep grains.
Good hop choice.
OG in Qbrew with 2.4 I get 1.048.
Maybe you used the default water batch vol? At 2.13, I get 1.054.
Just my guess.

I really like the OFVL done as a lager. Just brewed a 2x HME+ Munich. First time trying a Wyeast smack pack.

My default is set to 2.25, I upped it to 2.40 for this recipe

If I would of know it would come in low would of used all the 3.3# can

Trollby...that's odd. I ran the numbers through qBrew to double check also and got the exact same numbers you did. Maybe it was more water than expected???

Taste is very good but little light since I messed up the Munich malt. Still in style but not as malty as I would like.

Guess I have to make another batch :)
