Building a Pliny the Elder clone with Extract

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm gonna try to formulate a recipe here for PtE based on this recipe:
http://wiki.homebrewersassociation.org/PlinyTheElderCloneImperialIPA

Here's what I just made:
http://hopville.com/recipe/1646202

Probably way off but my first attempt.
Note, I want to use the new Marris Otter Extract from Northern Brewer for the second listing of the Pilsen extract, it's just not in the Hopville database yet.
It has the same ratio roughly as the AG recipe I based it off, with 45% pale and 39% M.O.

Who cares if it's exact......it's gonna be good!

I'm not saying I'm lazy.....let's just say I'm frugal and watch my time, but every Pliny recipe I see seems like lots of work and a good deal more moola. But boy, is it good.

If it helps, I would use the Northern Brewer Gold Malt Syrup as it has the same numbers as the Marris Otter... That is: SRM=4 and Ppg=36

That should help you dial in the recipe until they get it in there.

Looks good. Let me know how it turns out. I made the PTE extract kit from MoreBeer a while back. Slightly different.

Here's what I think is the official clone recipe. I made this and it was amazing! Won 1st place for flight in Empire Cup HB contest. I'd recommend using a hop spider or bagging the hops. I went commando with all of the hops and lost a good amount of volume with all the slurry.

I've done 3 different Pliny clones: one from a LHBS, morebeer, and rebel brewer. The one from the LHBS was way better than morebeer's. I don't know what it is, but every kit I've ordered from MoreBeer ends up way darker than what it's supposed to be. Also, I think that using all DME is better for this clone. I'm going to keg Rebel brewer's pliny clone tonight. I went commando the whole way, so I'm hoping that cold crashing it at 30F for a couple of days will do the trick.

If you like Pliny, you've gotta try Heady Topper. I actually prefer it over PLE, although it's next to impossible to get.
