Stout recommendation

Recommended Posts

Ok so I am I big fan of stouts but so far the ones that I have made, a Russian Imperial and an Oatmeal Stout have not had much of the roasted flavors. Are there any recommendations to get this characteristic into my stouts. Thanks for the help

You might try adding some cocao powder/chocolate and vanilla to the brews. Some expresso coffee might also add character. I am presuming you are already adding either UME or DME since one of the brews is a Russian Imperial.

Steep about 4 oz. to 6 oz. of roasted barley. That should do the trick!!!
Should end up roasty and toasty. Maybe use S-04 ale yeast as well.

I'm not a fan of chocolate and to a lesser degree coffee in my stouts. I just like the roasted, almost burnt, flavor myself.

Best of luck.

You might try lightly toasting your oats if you hadn't done that already. That might give you a little of the flavor you're after.
