Vanilla Porter

Recommended Posts

I'm happier than heck with my Vanilla Porter.

8 oz English Chocolate steeping grain
1 850 gm can MB Porter HME
1 lb Northern Brewer Dark LME
MB yeast
2 Tablespoons pure vanilla extract added after 1 week
Ferment 3 weeks. Condition 8 weeks @ room temp + 3 weeks in fridge

Note, I had made the new MB Porter when it first came out and found it to be very bitter, so I figured I could add a pound of malt without adding hops. This one is nicely balanced.

A real pro would use vanilla beans, but you know me.

I just had a delicious Vanilla Porter last night, and was thinking to myself "I need to find a recipe for this."
How strong was the Vanilla flavor in this?

I made something very similar a while back. Instead of using the vanilla extract, since I didn't want any sort of synthetic taste, I bought madagascar vanilla beans. I cut 3 of them in half, scraped out the inside, and added the vanilla to 2 ounces of makers mark to sanitize them. After a few days of the vanilla soaking in the bourbon, I added the bourbon and vanilla to the keg after 2 weeks of fermentation, and let it dry hop for about 3 days before bottling. The vanilla taste was strong but not overpowering. Not sure how your extract turned out, but I will be using by whole vanilla beans again in the future.

This looks tasty and I need to make another one of these since I left mine behind in the move. Question though - I have one of the old Black Tower Porter LME in addition to the New MrB Porter. Think I could just throw that in as opposed to dark LME (I have no LME on hand as of yet - still getting organized here). I do have everything else, and am looking to use up some of these MrB packs and get the pipeline rebuilt on the east coast with a few simple ones before I start trying to crank out some 5 gallon batches once we get the garage settled.

Cheers
jeff
