LME ----> DME

Recommended Posts

I have a wheat recipe that calls for 3.3 pounds of wheat LME but I can't get any wheat LME but I can get wheat DME. I am just wondering how that translates? Would I need 3.3 pounds of DME as well? Thanks.

As I understand it since LME is a liquid extract it contains more water than DME. I believe the target amount of DME is 80% of whatever LME you are using. So, for 3.3 pounds of LME you would need approximately 2.64 lbs of DME.

I'm sure the experts will chime in and correct me if that is incorrect.

Sorry I should have posted this before, here is the recipe:

3.3 lb Wheat LME
1/2 oz Williamette hops 60 min
1/2 oz Cascade hops 15 min
1/2 oz Cascade hops 0 min
S-05 Ale yeast

So using DME instead of LME would look like this right?

2.64 Wheat DME
1/2 oz Williamette hops 60 min
1/2 oz Cascade hops 15 min
1/2 oz Cascade hops 0 min
S-05 Ale yeast

Have u thought about using Hallertauer for the hops? The majority of recipies I see use these, that or Perle/Saaz combos. just my 2 cents

I really hate math, so I take the IDGAF approach, and figure it this way:

They sell DME in one-pound bags.

They sell LME in 3.3 pound cans.

Therefore, 3 pounds of DME = 1 can of LME.

This is probably wrong, but, as I mentioned above, IDGAF.

I'm still making beer.

It's not my own recipe, it's one I tried and liked so I am just going to stick to it. Thanks though

yep you probably go up to 3 pounds with no problems

Yeah I will probably just use 3 pounds since that's the size I buy my DME in anyways. Thanks.
