potassium sorbate

Recommended Posts

I added potassium sorbate to my apple cider after 4 weeks fermenting. It was probably too soon but I needed it too. My question is.......i have space in my frig for the 5 gallon glass carboy. It is currently at 38degrees........is it ok to put the cider with P Sorbate in the frig at 38degrees or must it be at room temperature? Thank you!

Hi Header, I have very little experience with using potassium sorbate, but I did some research and couldn't find any reference to temperature when using the preservative in wine or mead. My gut says that it would be fine, though the only difficulty I can see is in making sure the entire solution dissolves (if you have k-sorbate in powder form). If so, I would suggest just fully dissolving the sorbate in a small cup of warm water, and then pouring it into your cider. I can't think of any more adverse affect of sorbate in cold temp.
