I usually spare no expense either and simply put a number on the cap with a Sharpie and then post the list in the pantry, fridge, and beer fridge.  I spend so much time taking the labels off I sure as heck dont want to put another one on.  When I do give beer away as a gift I do try to step up the effort as in most cases I dont get the bottles back - and hence they no longer get beer.  Here is one for my Toboggan Run XPA:

Making the labels is one third the fun of making the beer! The other two thirds are the brewing (33.3%) and the drinking (33.4%)
