how do I know when its ready?

Recommended Posts

So I have the hard cider brew kit I got for Xmas. Its been sitting for a week and I can't tell if its ready. I tasted it and it doesn't have a lot of flavor. There's still foam on top and its pretty cloudy yet. Theres also a bunch of crap on the bottom... Should I let it sit another week? Maybe stir it first? Help!

Thanks!

do NOT stir. the stuff sinks to the bottom because it is stuff you don't want in your final product.

trub - dead yeast, sleeping yeast, waste proteins, fats and yeast poop... if you got trub (troob) you've got fermentation going on.

krausen - (kroy-sen)  the foamy frothy stuff that forms on tops while yeast are making alcohol.

side note:  every hard cider ive ever made has had alcohol but not much flavor.... unless I back-sweetened it before bottling in plastic bottles.  I'm not a fan of hard cider personally.
