Extra yeast packs

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've accumulated a few (just 4 or 5) extra yeast packs during my first 6 months at this.  I've searched the site and didn't find much on what to do with the extra yeast packs except for RickBeer saying you can add them to your boiling water for extra nutrients.  I'm guessing that kills the yeast but the live ones like to consume whatever is left.  RickBeer also says to keep the extra packs in the fridge.

Any other words of wisdom on what to do with extra yeast packs?

No, that's the best use for those.

If you wanted to you could also use them in a batch of 'jail cider'. Get a bottle of apple cider from the store (no preservatives) and drill out a hole in the cap for an airlock. Pour about 2 cups of the cider into a saucepan with about 1 cup of table sugar and 1 cup of lactose and a handful of raisins. Gently boil for 10-15 minutes and pour the liquid back into the bottle of cider (leaving out the raisins) along with the yeast and mix well. Place the cap and airlock on the bottle and put water in the airlock. Place the bottle in a cool dark place for about a week to 10 days and then cold crash for 1-2 days and enjoy some 'jail cider'.

If you are making a big beer (8%+) it would be a good idea to pitch 2 packets of MrB yeast, especially since they might be a bit old.
