Old stuff

Recommended Posts

I scored an old mr Beer kit from a garage sale today. The kind with the little cans of HME. The best by date was Jan and Feb of 2015. I am thinking of using them both in one batch, with new yeast.  Is it even worth the time? Keeping in mind for 5$, I also got an LBK, plastic bottles, and two packs of booster that feel like concrete.

Why the heck not!  Most you lose is five bucks and some time.  Nice score btw!! :)

PS-I thought this thread was about Rick when I saw the title. ;)

I didn't title the thread "ancient stuff", so that should have been a hint.

Reported Anthony for missing a good sense of humor...

If they were stored in someone's hot attic, they are garbage.  Those cans were last SOLD in 2012 when they were discontinued.  So they are 4+ years old.  I would just toss them, my attempt at making an old can with a neighbor produced crap.

well since Rick's a Guru now, he's got to be pretty ancient! must have taken him a thousand years to get to that status............

Update: I was gonna throw caution to the wind and brew it, but I took a little taste of the HME and it was truly awful. Very bitter and funky, so I tossed it out and just brewed an American lager with booster. Thanks!

Good call!  Having brewed up a 10-year-old refill once upon a time, only to have it turn out terrible, I heartily concur with your decision.

Should've brewed it.  I would've bought it from you and gave it to my MIL. ;)
