Booster , LME and DME Affecting Specific Gravity

Recommended Posts

I'm new to brewing, made my first pilsner following the recipe to a T, and am ready to bottle it here shortly. I got hooked after scouring all the forums and youtube, so I purchased a 2nd LBK to start red ale (specifically Rose's Rambling Red) which calls for an LME and booster pack. This may be a rather uninformed question, but how will these affect my specific gravity (both original and final),  if at all? I'm wondering for future experimentations.  A lot of forum topics are dedicated to whether or not to add a booster vs LME vs DME to change the flavor of a "base" recipe or raise the ABV. What numbers should I be looking for (besides taste test) to determine if fermentation is done?

If you follow the recipe exactly as it comes from MRB then the info they have on the site for it is going to be roughly accurate so as they say... Relax, dont worry, have a homebrew! (well in this case a local craft brew since this is your second batch and the first hasnt hit bottles yet....lol)

  • OG: 1.055 (approx.) -- FG: 1.014 (approx.)
  • Flavor: Malty
  • ABV (alc/vol): 5.5%
  • SRM (Color): 14
  • IBU (Bitterness): 21
  • BJCP Style: 15. Irish Beer - 15A. Irish Red

Thanks for the tip hotrod. Do you know how the OG/FG would change if at all if I didn't add booster but added another golden or smooth LME?

It will change some but not sure on how much.

On the Mr. Beer website it tells you exactly how much a pouch of LME or a bag of booster adds to a brew.  It is shown in change to ABV.

OG will of course go up.  FG won't move much because you are fermenting away what you're adding...
