MUG MidWest meeting

Recommended Posts

Per request, I'm updating this post with the details of the meeting

What:  Mr.Beer User Group meeting in Munster, Indiana.

When::  Friday, April 13 through Monday April 16

Definite attendees:   @MiniYoda, @Creeps McLane, friend of Creeps McLane. @MRB Josh R, @C-ya

Possible attendees:  @scouterbill

Hotel:  SpringHill Suites by Marriott.  9651 Calumet Ave.  So new that Google maps doesn't show it, and Google Street view shows it under construction.  It is located on a golf course, and is the closest to 3 Floyds (a 10 minute walk to/stagger back).  For reference, 3 Floyds is at 9750 Indiana Pkwy

Proposed schedule (open to suggestions)@Creeps McLane

 - Friday evening - Bar/Room hop.  There aren't many bars in the area, most places frown upon bringing outside alcohol into a bar, and most police frown upon open containers in public places.  So, to avoid the hassle, we will "bar hop" between our hotel rooms, which each guest hosting a local/home brew sampling.  We can call for pizza delivery.  If the ladies prefer wine, let me know what type and I'll get a bottle of Kentucky wine.  Also might be able to find something from Kentucky for the kids.

  - Saturday morning - After sleeping in a bit (we'll probably need it) and breakfast, we'll work on a care package for our thirsty friends in Arizona.
  - Saturday afternoon - Head to 3 Floyds.  Tours are offered every hour between 12:30 and 5:30.  Once we get a head count of who is going, I will call the pub and see if they can schedule a private tour for us.  Regardless, we'll be there for a while, so we probably can do more than one tour.  Note that the Cubs host the Braves at 1:20pm CDT and the White Sox visit the Twins at 1:10pm CDT, so things could be crowded at that time.
  - Saturday evening - Open.  Stay there, go back to the hotel for more sampling, or go to True BBQ.

 - Sunday morning - Again, sleep in late (we'll probably need it again, and it *is* a vacation).  Finish care package for Arizona with 3 Floyds beers.
  - Sunday afternoon - I'm open to suggestions.  There is a place called "Brew and Blooms" a bit north in Hammond IN.  Per the pictures on Google, they indicate that they are "home brewing and urban gardening".  Their Facebook page indicates that they are open 10am to 6pm Sunday.  Also Byway Brewing company isn't very far either.
  - Sunday evening - One last gathering at 3 Floyds for a final toast.

 - Monday - Back home again, unless you need to leave Sunday.

Threw out that date because it gives us about 3 months to schedule time off, make plans for hotel, travel, kids sitters, brew something special, etc.

and if lucky, the folks at Mr. Beer could create a t-shirt for us

BTW, this is not restricted to those who live in the "mid west".  All are welcome.  Munster IN is close to a big city that has big airports.  Can't remember the name of where the Cubs/White Sox/Bears/Black Hawks/Bulls play, but it'll come to me.

and if SWMBO is skeptical, tell her "fly with me", "road trip up north", and give her a credit card. She'll figure out where Michigan Avenue is.

:D :D :D

EDIT. fixed spelling.  Not Howks.  HAWKS.

and.....Go Fire!!!!!!!!!!

Yea, I know. The name of that city is on the tip of my tongue....  :P

The only problem is that SWMBO hates flying!

That's a bummer.  I had been debating on going since I go to Portland so often anyway (2.5  hours down the road).  However, my schedule just changed at work, so I no longer have Thursday/Friday off, so what would have lined up nicely, isn't so much any more.  Not that I couldn't make it happen... we'll see.

As for the other, I bet that would be fun.  I'm always looking for an excuse to go somewhere, but that is the last weekend of Tax Season, so I am out for sure!  #BusyBusy!

@kedogn the date was randomly chosen.  I can change it if you think you could make it later in April

Thanks. I’ll have to get back on that, honestly. I just saw the Seahawks are playing the Raiders in London the day before my bday this year. I’m going to try talking the wife into going to that. We’ve been wanting to go to London, the Hawks are playing and it’s basically my birthday. Sounds like a reason to party... of course how busy Manfish is will dictate what I can and can’t do as well. We shall see. :)

I’m thinking I got the wife agreeing to London.  She isn’t sure she would want to do the game, and honestly, if we watching it at a real English Pub instead of paying the $ to go, I’m game.  Looking like riding the train to Paris, Amsterdam and Munich also (travel agents get awesome deals on Eurorail passes).  My business partner and his SWMBO is thinking about going too. #ManfishInLondon

If we are going to do this in Munster, I'm guessing a stop by 3 Floyd's is in order, no?  Great beer and great food.  @scouterbill, you be glad to know the last couple of times I went, the music was at a tolerable level.  I'm about 45 mins or so from there so count me in!

If anyone can ship me a few cans/bottles of 3 Floyds, I can send some AZ beers or some of my homebrew in trade. PM me, if this is possible.

It was my intent to bring an ample supply of Louisville/Kentucky beers for all that attend to sample.  In part I will use a box that holds 24 bottles.  Once we've emptied the box, we will go out and fill it backup with 3 Floyds beers and ship it to you.  I'll address it to Cooper's DIY and not Mr. Beer, to help hide the contests.

And you ship your AZ beers to us, care of the hotel which we will stay in, we'll probably  be able to ship you some of our home/local brews back to you in the same box.

I'll be working on hotel suggestions, and contact 3 Floyds to see if they give brewery tours, later this week/weekend.

MUG - Midwest Meeting

When - Friday April 13 to Monday April 16

Where - Munster, Indiana, home of 3 Floyds Brewery, 9750 Indiana Pkwy

Hotels - There are three hotels relatively close to 3 Floyds

 - SpringHill Suites by Marriott.  9651 Calumet Ave.  So new that Google maps doesn't show it, and Google Street view shows it under construction.  It is located on a golf course, and is the closest to 3 Floyds (a 10 minute walk to/stagger back).
 - Homewood Suites by Hilton.  9120 Calumet Ave.  A bit further, 29 minute walk, 5 minute drive.
 - Hampton Inn & Suites.  8936 Calumet Ave.  Basically right next door to Hampton Inn.  While a bit longer walk/short drive, Hilton and Hampton are next door to True BBQ And Whiskey Bar.

All list indoor heated pool and free breakfast.  I'm hoping someone will step up and take the lead on the hotel part of the meeting, as I will be handling a lot of other details.  Take votes on who, which hotel and how many rooms, and then call the hotel to see if we can get a block discount.

Initial Schedule (subject to LOTS of changes)

 - Friday evening - Bar/Room hop.  There aren't many bars in the area, most places frown upon bringing outside alcohol into a bar, and most police frown upon open containers in public places.  So, to avoid the hassle, we will "bar hop" between our hotel rooms, which each guest hosting a local/home brew sampling.  We can call for pizza delivery.  If the ladies prefer wine, let me know what type and I'll get a bottle of Kentucky wine.  Also might be able to find something from Kentucky for the kids.

 - Monday - Back home again

You're right....I wasn't paying attention when I wrote down the most recent post.  I've corrected the post so that the correct weekend, April 13-16, is listed.

Sorry 'bout that.

P.S., updated the times of the baseball games.  The Cubs and White Sox play at the same time on Saturday 14th, so things could be crowded that afternoon

I was thinking you switched it to easter weekend which would not fly in my house. But i was wrong anyway.

I really like the bottle share idea. That sounds like a good time.

@hotrod3539 you thinking about stopping?

@C-ya you staying overnight or just gonna drive the 45 meet and greet and have a beer or two and take off?

Easter this year is on April 1st.  Makes me wonder how many people are going to show up for church services in a rabbit costume or some other "fools" outfit.

I may stay Fri. and Sat. nights to make it interesting.  I know it is easy to get too much 3F in you to drive.

Doubt we can do a group hotel thing.

That could be interesting to make it out there. Please edit your first post with all the information so that people don't need to scroll down to get the details. At least one of us from Mr. Beer should be able to make it, Pat is from Chicago, I am a Purdue grad and ran hotels in Merrillville before delving into beer in Arizona, so we know our way around the midwest. One way or another, I think we can do something.

Im sorry, i meant to say that if you wanted some help planning this i could help out. I know you mentioned some one helping with the hotels. Whatever you dont want to do I can help with.

Im still not positive on my timing but my goal is to leave green bay around 2 pm on friday, swing through sheboygan for a quick growler fill when 3 sheeps opens at 3. Then maybe eat dinner in Chicago and final in Munster for the Friday night bottle share!

Doubt we'll have to do anything for planning a hotel, as I don't think we'll need enough rooms to justify requesting a  group discount.  My vote is that we all call the Spring Hill Suites and reserve things on our own.

I now have off that friday before. Im in contact with one of my other buddies but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be able to make it. So then it’ll be me and my friend Jeff. Hes a super nice guy who drinks a lot of IPAs but is a fan of well crafted beers all around. He’s my super taster. The one I bring all my beers to for judgement. Cant wait for y’all to buy me a drink at 3 floyds!!!

Request a business trip. 3 floyds makes legendary beers. A man of your status needs to taste them fresh from the establishment and possibly craft up a few HME versions. Plus a blog write up on the whole thing from MRB’s very own AHA Governing Committee nominee! I dont see the problem here...

Did a Google map search.

3 Floyds is     9750 Indiana Parkway Munster, Indiana 46321

The hotel is   9651 Calumet Ave Muster, Indiana

They listed it as a 10 minute walk.  They don't list the time to drive between the two places.

Man.....even though I’m in Texas, I would totally attend this get together, however I’m not worthy yet. I’ve never completed a successful batch yet. Have several fermenting or conditioning. This time next year I will be able to attend with a bit respectability.

Make the trip! What better way to learn than sitting around some seasoned homebrewers, talking and drinking beer? We have all been in your shoes. Keep at it and you'll be fine. The patience not only comes in handy in waiting for your beer, it also comes in refining your craft overall. Too many people drop out due to lack of confidence in their abilities.

If you can't make this trip, don't worry.  I'll try to organize others in the future, although I'm best planning in areas I know, such as Louisville and Cincinnati.  I'd be help people organize an event in other areas too.

Bottle share Friday, aka "bar room hopping" won't happen in one room.  We'll visit each other's hotel rooms and share what we brought, one room at a time.  We'll order pizza if we need to.

Saturday, drink 'em dry.  Tour the brewery a few times if we need too.

Also note that, per the first post, Byway Brewing company is close, and the home brew store of "Brew and Blooms" is also close.  We can hit them Saturday, or sometime Sunday.

We'll make up the rules as we go.  Just need to make sure we make a care package to mail to the folks in Tucson

I was looking at my brewing calendar, getting things ready for the weekend, and saw what I wrote down for next weekend.  "DO NOT BREW".  Then I looked why.  Three weeks later is the MUG meeting at Munster / 3 Floyds.

That means that in 4 weeks, we'll be drinking 3 Floyds dry.  If you're going, make sure you reserve your hotel room soon.....apparently there's only 5 left that weekend.

I can receive the package. I will send you my mailing address via personal message.

I don't have home/personal brews to send back, but I'll send some of Louisville/Kentucky's finest (ever had a true-to-recipe Kentucky Common?)  Others who show up will contribute, and I'll resend the box with what we collect after the event.

As of now, just the two of us.  I'm hoping to have a head count by the end of the week, so that I know how much beer to bring and what to order from Mr. Beer for the event.

And if the folks at Mr. Beer can't make it, no worries.....I'll try to ship them some stuff

First time Americans flew an airplane, there was one person on board

First time the US launched a manned mission into space, there was one person on board.

First time someone flew around the world (with stops), there was one person on board.

First MUG meeting, there are two people on board.

Got them all beat.  But the more the merrier

First time someone flew around the world (with stops), there was one person on board.

First MUG meeting, there are two people on board.

Got them all beat.  But the more the merrier

My wife and my dance card is pretty full this year otherwise I'd be trying to make it.

So it looks like I will be attending this event with you guys, at least for the weekend. I will also be bringing a bunch of free MRB swag for attendees and possibly a few AZ beers to share, including a few of my own. If anything changes from the original itinerary on the top post, please let us know. We will look into doing a livestream on location, but I may just video the event and show some highlights in a later live stream. We'll figure it out. Even if there are only a couple of us there, we'll still have a good time (more beer for us, right? lol).

See you all in a couple of weeks! B)

So you drew short straw?   :D

You'll be #3 (I'll update the first message of the thread shortly).  I won't have any home brew......most of them are Mr. Beer recipes anyways.  But I'll bring some of Louisville/Kentucky's finest.  Ever had a true-to-recipe Kentucky Common?

Harbottle Brewing Company here in Tucson makes one called Kentucky Sunglasses. While it's to style, it's definitely not a native Kentucky beer.

We can also put this out on our social media channels. We may be able to get a few more people that aren't on the forums to show up.

Me and @MiniYoda will work on another one For maybe September In the Greater Columbus Oh. area (Including BrewDogs Only brewery here in the US.). We have TONS of breweries and Taprooms around here, many within walking distance(ISH) of each other so some planning might be done with everyone once we are all together. We have an airport right here (John Glen International airport code CMH) for those that want to fly in and hotels/motels GALORE! Depending on how many come we could look at renting a couple vehicles, or piling into the vehicles of those that drive in, or live around here and go from there. We are only in the VERY early stages of this idea so look for a separate post to pop up soon!

@C-ya @scouterbill yall in? Were getting close

I'll make it Saturday evening after a class.  I'll try to get a room so we can partake more of the good stuff without trying to drive home.

@C-Ya added to the "attending" list.  Total of 5.

I've updated my Mr. Beer shopping cart, and now have to start planning what I need to buy to bring up.

Quite probably the most difficult part of this event is the fact that 3 Floyds ships its beers to the Louisville area.  I just got a Untappd message that one of my favorite pub has added LaserSnake to their tap list.  I hope I can ignore the tap and hold out two more weeks.

Man, wish I could make this.  My son is in a theatre performance that weekend, so it would behoove me to not miss that.  ;)  I am also working the East Nashville Beer Fest the weekend before, and the World Beer Cup and Craft Brewers Conference a couple weeks after, so I probably shouldn't push my luck on beer events.  Being a former Hoosier, it's been ages since I've been to Three Floyds.  We did our 4th annual meetup with [a board that can't be mentioned here] in February here in Nashville and it was a great deal of fun.  We've done Asheville twice and Nashville twice so far.    You all are always welcome to come down to Nashville...  we have a great brewing scene now, with plenty of stellar breweries.  Oh, and music...  lots of music.  And hot chicken.

You could always start a MUG Southeast group and plan a meet-up

Well, I already have the annual meetups from the other group (folks who used to be here), so another group may be overkill for me.  But if someone plans one down this way, i will certainly be interested...  ;}

My attendance is 'iffy' at best. We've been crazy busy since the first of the year and my boss is sending me 'hither, thither, and yon' supporting other regions. I've probably logged 30k miles this year (10k/month), so even if I'm not busy that weekend I'll have to do some serious bribing to get SWMBO to bless this endeavor. I'm going to try my 'damnedest'.

@MiniYoda, will you be in the Cinti area for any reason (Reds game, dijing out, sight seeing) over the next 2 weeks?
