Second Batch - Booster

Recommended Posts

After reading the manual, doing my first batch and reading recipes here at Mr.Beer, it almost sounds like anytime when using the HME and UME, the booster always optional. Is this true?

I also misplaced my original manual, but I do recall a table allowing a brewer to estimate their alcohol content. The table had a value for HME, UME, the booster and some other items (such as honey).

Can I find this table here at Mr. Beer someplace?

thanks!

You are right, with a HME and UME together, the booster is optional. If you want a higher ABV then toss it in, if not you can skip it. I'm not sure about the table your talking of. I'm sure theres one around here. I use qbrew to plan out my recipes, so that provides those kinds of details.

So the basic recipe (HME & Booster) is 3.7%.

A Deluxe recipe (HME & UME) is 4.6%.

A Deluxe recipe (HME & UME) with a booster is 6.0%.

Seems simple enough, thank you very much!

Page 17 in the "Brewing With Mr. Beer" Brewer's Guide:

Alcohol Volume by Chart
Use the chart below to estimate the alcohol content of your personalized recipes. Simply add the % used for each ingredient used. To avoid potential off-flavors, make sure at least 2/3 of your potential abv comes from the malt (HME and/or UME)

Fermentable Sugar Contribution per 2 Gallon Batch (ABV)

1.21 can Mr. Beer HME Malt...2.3%
1.21 can Mr. Beer Unhopped Malk Extract...2.3%
1 pound Mr. Beer Booster...1.4%
1 1/2 cups white or brown cane sugar...1.5%
1 cup honey or molasses...0.9%
1 cup real maple syrup...0.7%
15 ounce can Oregon Fruit...1.0%

Example 1:
A can of Octoberfest Vienna Lager brewed (HME)brewed with 1 pouch of Booster should finish at approximately 3.7% abv.

Example 2:
A can of cowboy Lager (HME) brewed with a can of Pale Export (UME), a 1/2 pouch of Booster and a 1/2 cup of honey will be about 5.8% abv.

This looks like the chart I saw in the instruction manual, thank you very much!

What about DME? How much ABV would 1 lb of DME add?

1 lb of DME is roughly equivalent to 1 can of UME.

In this thread on the most recent qbrew update they indicate that the list from Mr. Beer may be a little on the optimistic side. qbrew treats the HME/UME cans from Mr. Beer as 2.0% ABV.

So if somebody is going to brew a Deluxe recipe and the booster was free, what are the reasons not to use the booster? Technical reasons or personal opinions are all welcomed.

JerseyBrewer,
I would and do use booster. I think booster is unduly dissed. IMHO.

Thanks Sham. It does seem the booster does not get a lot of love her.
